What is Steam sentiment analysis?

Sentiment analysis is the process of measuring the emotion behind text. Applied to Steam reviews, it turns free-form player writing into a structured read on how people feel — not just whether a review is a thumbs up or down, but how positive or negative it is, and what that feeling attaches to.

Steam only reports a binary recommend / do-not-recommend split. SteamSense reads the actual text and grades it, so you can tell a lukewarm "it is fine" apart from a glowing recommendation, and a minor gripe apart from a refund-worthy complaint.

How sentiment is scored

Reviews are classified into five sentiment tiers, from strongly positive to strongly negative, rather than a single positive/negative flag. That distribution is the core output: two games can both show "Very Positive" on Steam while having very different emotional shapes underneath — one broadly liked, the other adored by a passionate core and disliked by everyone else.

The analysis runs on a game's most helpful public reviews and is cached, so popular games load instantly while a first-time run takes about a minute.

Beyond a positive/negative score

Sentiment by topic

Each topic players raise — gameplay, performance, story, price — carries its own positive and negative share, so you see exactly what the sentiment is about.

Sentiment over time

Daily snapshots track how the mood shifts after a patch, a sale, or a controversy — the momentum a single score hides. See the Anomaly Radar.

Player quotes

The editorial report grounds each finding in real review text, so the sentiment is traceable back to what players actually wrote.

Risk signals

Concentrations of negative sentiment around a single topic are flagged, so a building problem is visible before it drags the score down.
